INAUGURAL AND INTERIM NETWORK

In mid-2020, The Global Institute on Innovation Districts launched a first-of-its-kind practitioner-led network dedicated solely to the growth and evolution of innovation districts. These hyper-local geographies of innovation—whether newly emerging or mature—leverage physical proximity and a mix of sectors and actors, including many who are now on the front lines of COVID-19 R&D and patient care. The network is helping leaders of these geographies of innovation on their responses to the pandemic as they refine their positioning over the long-term. The four focus areas of the Global Network of Innovation Districts are as follows:

Facilitating tailored sessions that help districts to reposition themselves, building off the priorities and current state-of-play in each district.

GIID has conducted extensive, empirically grounded research about the drivers and indicators of success for districts in various global contexts. Insights and findings are shared and refined with network participants as they advance their priorities and unique value proposition over the near- and long-term.

Providing districts with a curated forum to connect as peers and share strategies for directly addressing challenges and opportunities from the global pandemic.

Districts are engaging in highly curated, closed-door sessions with their peers to talk through how they are pivoting during the crisis and to share specific tactics for addressing the urgent needs of their innovation ecosystem and their local, regional, and national economies through recovery.

Elevating the important role districts play as problem-solving power houses.

GIID is collecting and consolidating a richly diverse and irrefutable body of evidence to articulate why and how innovation districts are leading the way forward on seemingly intractable challenges such as climate change, inequality, and global health crises.

Providing districts an opportunity to set the stage for global collaboration.

The network is helping to build relationships and deepen awareness of the state of play for districts in various world regions. Whether through partnerships between industry and academia, across sectors or world regions, or across size with large corporations aligning with the often more nimble small firms, GIID is advancing collaboration innovation that builds from each district’s unique assets and research strengths.
